2. What is most interesting about your company's internal culture?
We believe that there are several factors that have helped consistently rank Spillman as one of the best places to work in Utah (Utah Business magazine in 2006, 2010, and 2011, and Utah Department of Workforce Services from 2009 to 2011). We recognize that employees are our greatest asset and the key to nurturing happy customers. Our greatest emphasis is placed on company stability, company pride, and employee satisfaction. We put a priority on employee well-being and offer our more than 200 Spillman employees competitive salaries, medical and dental benefits with no premiums, and vacation condos that they and their families can use at no cost. At Spillman, we also believe that the happiest, healthiest employees are also the most productive. On any given day, you might see Spillman employees working out in the onsite company gym, chatting around the complimentary beverage machines in the break room, or bringing their families to one of our annual events like our company Halloween party.
3. How long have you been in business, and why did you establish your business in Utah?
Spillman was founded in Cache Valley 30 years ago and moved to Salt Lake City in 2005. The original idea for Spillman Technologies was created when its founder and chairman, Richard Spillman, developed the concept of a computerized tax roll and budgetary accounting system for a Utah State University computer science course. After discussing the project with Cache County officials, Richard realized that the county also needed a law enforcement software program to manage records and information. Spillman Technologies was officially founded in 1982 and now provides public safety software to more than 950 agencies across the nation. We are a Utah company founded by Utah natives, and the state’s support of local businesses as well as the availability of highly trained technology and sales professionals will keep us in Utah for many years to come.
4. How is your company affecting change?
Spillman is constantly striving to help public safety personnel meet the changing needs of law enforcement. As consumer-based technology evolves, it is our responsibility to ensure that our software also evolves with our customers’ changing preferences for accessing data. One of our newest products, called Spillman Touch, allows field officers to access critical records, alerts, and warnings from a mobile device such as an iPhone, Blackberry, or iPad. We also put a priority on developing decision-based products that help public safety personnel proactively pinpoint crime trends and make informed decisions. In the 21st century, public safety personnel often deal with criminals who are crossing jurisdictional boundaries. We are an industry leader at enabling agencies to exchange information with multiple jurisdictions so that they can work together to prevent crime and increase efficiency.
